LungA School is an artist-run residential art school for adults, recognised in Iceland as a folk high-school. The school is both created and run as a collective art practice, and a collective art practice created and run as a school. Each program is given the freedom it needs to be shaped by the participants who join the school at that time. We are a school that understands education as an artistic practice not an institutional obligation, and that understands education as part of existing in the world and of sharing your experience of living with others.
We need the support of individuals, partners and other organisations of people in order to keep each program as financially accessible to our participants as possible, to help the school be a generous and healthy part of the small community of Seyðisfjörður and to maintain our provision of a very special alternative to traditional arts education around the world. To this end, we are supported by the municipality of Múlaþing and receive a grant per participant from the Icelandic government which equates to about 45% of our expenditures. We have also have very generous support from Síldarvinnslan who donated The Net Factory to the school as well as Múlaþing, Hafaldan, Hótel Aldan and The Filling Station who rent us their facilities for a reasonable price. We also have the good fortune to be surrounded by a generous and motivated community of artists and arts workers, many of whom have given time, knowledge and resources to maintain the school. This sharing of resources within a small town is part of what makes it able to hold a vibrant, powerful and creative place to be.
The number of participants is limited to what the school feels it can hold yet we value being able to cater for the broadest range of participants we can as well as for those alienated by mainstream educational systems. All of this support helps us to do that by keeping our fees as low as possible, and to maintain the school where we are. Our fees for each residential programme cover food and board as well as tuition and availability of resources. For these programmes the current fees are 700.000 kr. ISK. Travel to and from the school, as well as any unique needs of participants are not included. With the current delivery of two ART Programs and one LAND Program per year, the costs are approximately 1.800.000 kr. ISK per participant for fully subscribed programs. For our non-residential RADIO school the current fees are 150.000 kr. ISK and costs roughly equate to 750.000 kr. ISK per participant. Any extra costs are raised annually by the school through grants and donations from those who support what we are doing here and the social importance of an alternative art education.
We operate some practices that are unusual for institutions. We maintain a practice of paying staff equally regardless of their position. We try to give power to our participants in each program to make the school they want and need. Although the artists, workshop leaders and others involved in the school come to us not only from within Iceland but from around the world, always to provide the very best situations we can hold, we aim to source local and ethical goods and services where possible. Our annual financial report is always available online, under About the School. The school finances are audited annually by KPMG.
